Curly Hair

Curly Cuts...

Are they for you?

Do you have curly or wavy hair?

Do you ONLY wear your hair with its natural curl?

If the answer is YES to BOTH of these questions, then a curly cut could be for you.

The benefit of a curly cut is that the hair is cut in its natural position so that the spring of each individual curl can be taken into account - curls are rarely uniform all over the head. If you're wary of having your hair cut due to 'spring up'  a curly cut could be the answer as you can see the length that your finished hair will be.

Traditional cuts still have a place for some "Curlies" I can always offer advice if you're unsure.

How to prepare for a Curly Cut

Do

Cleanse/Co-wash

Condition - remove knots well

*Your hair needs to be fully dry for me to do a curly cut*

You can wash and dry your hair the day before if you can protect your curls/waves overnight

(use satin bonnet, satin pillowcase, buff etc)*

Style your hair in your usual way

(with product ideally)

Consider any issues you have with your hair ready to ask questions.

I don't believe in "curl categories" and use the density and length of your hair to determine how long I'll need. Prices are calculated by density also, consider do you have a lot of hair, not enough hair or a nice amount of hair? This will give an indication of the cost of an appointment.

Low density hair £50 - Allow up to 1.5 hours

Med density hair £60 - Allow up to 2 hours

High density hair £70 - Allow up to 3 hours

Traditional style cut £45-50 /  New hairstyle traditional cut £60 - Allow up to 1.5 hours

Bring your own products if you have any allergies or sensitivities.

I use Only Curls and Organic Colour Systems styling products.

I stock these products (including satin bonnets) if you would like to purchase from me.

Don't

Wear your hair up, or in any style that stretches or changes your curl pattern

Dry brush or comb your hair before your appointment.

Your Curl Type

Boxing your curls into categories is a thing of the past. Here is an idea of what could be useful for me to know...

How much hair do you have? (Low, medium, or high density)

consider the circumference of your hair in a pony tail

Is most of your hair wavy, curly, or very curly/coily?

most people have a variety of different curl patterns

Is your hair high or low porosity?

(hint - low porosity hair is usually not coloured, and really hard to get wet. This may be all over or just in places)

Homemade Flaxseed Recipe
Ingredients
1/4 Cup Brown Linseeds
2-3 Cups Water
1 TSP Vitamin E (optional preservative)
Lavender Oil (scent & Antibacterial, also optional)
Method

Put your linseeds in to cold water in a saucepan.

Bring water to the boil, and then turn down.

Stir the water often while it gently bubbles for about 10 minutes.

Dip the back of a spoon in, when a viscose string can be seen hanging from the spoon, it's done.

Remove from the heat.

Tip through a sieve immediately (be careful, it's HOT). Once cooled, it's too thick and squeezing through a mesh will be required.

Allow to cool, transfer to tub or bottle then add the Vit E and Lavender oil.

Store in the fridge, or freeze in ice cube tray to last longer.

Flash Drying

What is it?

What we want, is for our hair to hold onto water while we form our curls. Sometimes, under certain circumstances (or because of certain ingredients in hair products) the water is very quickly pulled out of the hair. Your hair doesn't become dry, but instantly has small frizzy strands poking out of the curl before you've even started to style. This frizz stays (or gets worse!) once your hair is styled.

How can we avoid it?

Identify what causes your flash drying. It's different for everyone. Keep your product routine simple whilst you investigate.

• Glycerin is the most mentioned ingredient responsible for flash drying.

• Aloe Vera molecules are capable of withholding and attracting large amounts of water from the hair, inducing a sudden water loss.

• Regularly use of deep cleansing shampoo, or using a moderately acidic pH to remove/minimise product build-up. (ACV added to conditioner can work well)

• Avoid sulphate shampoos. They could increase hair protein loss and can make hair damaged and fragile,     which subsequently alter hair-moisture balance and induce flash drying.

• If your hair is sensitive to proteins, it’s best to avoid products having large protein molecules.

• Use soft water for everyday cleansing; the metal build-up could be detrimental for your hair. Acidic pH shampoo will help the removal of calcium and magnesium ions.

• Don't use heavy high molecular weight oils/butter and waxes such as beeswax, petrolatum, carnauba wax.

In case you have flash drying right after using a particular product, and you need a quick solution:

• Immediately wash your hair using a deep cleansing shampoo to remove product residue.

• Apply a regular conditioner to detangle your hair and rinse it off.

• Apply a simple leave-in conditioner avoiding products known to cause flash- drying.
